Temple Way

Improving routes to and from Temple Meads for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

Aerial view of Temple Way

Overview

We are planning a series of changes to Temple Way from its northern end to its junction with Friary just before Bristol Temple Meads station.

The plans include a small change to Old Market Roundabout and the bus stops to the north of the roundabout.

The changes would make buses travelling along Temple Way more reliable and improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Three lane traffic on both sides of Temple Way with large office blocks either side.

About

We are planning a series of changes to Temple Way to improve walking, wheeling, cycling and bus priority.

Bus changes

  • Adding a new northbound bus lane alongside bus stops S12 and S14 – just to the north of Old Market Roundabout.
  • Adding a new southbound bus lane from Old Market Roundabout to Friary.
  • Changing the layout of the southbound slip road from Old Market Roundabout to provide space for the bus lane alongside bus stop M1.
  • Installing a bus shelter to bus stop T9 between Temple Back East and Friary.
  • Relocating bus stop T8 to the University of Law so we can add a bus lane alongside the bus stop to enable buses not stopping at this stop to overtake stopped buses.
  • Providing a small section of bus lane on Old Market Roundabout to help buses coming from Old Market and turning north.

Pedestrian and cycle changes

  • Installing a two-way separated cycle lane from the corner of Old Market Roundabout by the Stag and Hounds to Friary, outside Ovo Energy.
  • Maintaining a pavement at least 2m wide for this same length, where it is not slightly restricted by trees.
  • Installing a new pedestrian and cycle crossing across Temple Way at Avon Street and upgrading the pedestrian and cycle crossing from Temple Back to Temple Back East.
  • Narrowing the central reservation north of Temple Back East to allow for high-quality pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities east-west as well as north-south.
  • Retaining the trees on the east side of Temple Way, repairing the pavement that their roots have broken, and adding new planting.

Investment and funding

The Temple Way project is being funded by the UK Government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

How we got here

We ran the Bristol City Centre Transport Changes consultation on the proposed changes in summer 2024.

Read the consultation report.

We have since updated some of the designs for the transport proposals based on the feedback, including retaining the loading bay on Broad Plain.

Construction

Construction work on Temple Way is starting on 1 December 2025 and will take up to 12 months.

The main construction phases will start on the southern end close to Friary and progress northwards past Old Market Roundabout.

This is an early, indicative programme. The timings could change depending on external factors, such as the weather and ground conditions.

We will update this page regularly.

Temple Way from December 2025 to January 2026

Preparatory work, to remove some pedestrian refuge islands and traffic light and street light columns, will take place that will make it easier to reroute traffic around the works. There will be lane closures at times next to the areas being worked on to provide a safe working area. Temple Way will need to close overnight in January as this work progresses. The date will be confirmed nearer the time.

Friary to Temple Back East from January to March 2026

he bus lane from Friary to Temple East Back on the east side of Temple Way will close to allow a new pavement and cycle path to be built. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided. The T9 bus stop will need to be closed during this phase of the work – the nearest bus stop is at Temple Meads.

Relocating T8 bus stop from January to March 2026

A section of bus lane will need to close while work takes place to move the T8 bus stop on the west side of Temple Way at the start of 2026. The new bus stop will be built next to the University of Law on Temple Way before the existing stop next to the Hilton Hotel is removed. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided while works are completed on the pavement.

Avon Street to Broad Plain from February to April 2026

One lane of general traffic will need to close while work continues on the east side of Temple Way to construct a new pavement and cycle path. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided.

Temple Back East to Avon Street from April to June 2026

Although traffic will still be able to turn left into Temple Back East, the traffic lanes will change to allow the work to continue on the east side of Temple Way, to construct a new pavement and cycle path. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided.

Broad Plain from April to June 2026

Work will continue on the east side of Temple Way to construct a new pavement and cycle path. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided. Pedestrian and cycle links east (past Gardner Haskins) will remain open but may have to be diverted around the construction works. Access for general traffic onto Broad Plain from Temple Way will remain, although there will be a small diversion around the works area and Broad Plain will need to close to allow for construction at some point within this phase. More information to follow.

Broad Plain to Old Market Roundabout from April to June 2026

The bus layby for the existing M1 bus stop will be closed and a temporary bus stop provided between Broad Plain and Avon Street, while work continues on the east side of Temple Way to construct a new pavement and cycle path. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided.

Temple Way over the summer and autumn 2026

Work is needed on the central reservation along Temple Way. This will require the traffic lanes on either side of the central reservation to be closed so the work can be carried out safely.

Temple Back to Avon Street from July to September 2026

The northbound bus lane will need to close while work takes place on the west side of Temple Way to create pedestrian and cycle crossings over the road. An alternative route for pedestrians will be provided while works are completed on the pavement.

Temple Way resurfacing works from October 2026

Temple Way will need to close overnight towards the end of the programme for resurfacing works. There will be diversion routes put in place. More information will be released nearer the time.
