Overview
We are planning a series of changes to Temple Way from its northern end to its junction with Friary just before Bristol Temple Meads station.
The plans include a small change to Old Market Roundabout and the bus stops to the north of the roundabout.
The changes would make buses travelling along Temple Way more reliable and improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists.
About
We are planning a series of changes to Temple Way to improve walking, wheeling, cycling and bus priority.
Bus changes:
- Adding a new northbound bus lane alongside bus stops S12 and S14 – just to the north of Old Market Roundabout.
- Adding a new southbound bus lane from Old Market Roundabout to Friary.
- Changing the layout of the southbound slip road from Old Market Roundabout to provide space for the bus lane alongside bus stop M1.
- Installing a bus shelter to bus stop T9 between Temple Back East and Friary.
- Relocating bus stop T8 to the University of Law so we can add a bus lane alongside the bus stop to enable buses not stopping at this stop to overtake stopped buses.
- Providing a small section of bus lane on Old Market Roundabout to help buses coming from Old Market and turning north.
Pedestrian and cycle changes:
- Installing a two-way separated cycle lane from the corner of Old Market Roundabout by the Stag and Hounds to Friary, outside Ovo Energy.
- Maintaining a pavement at least 2m wide for this same length, where it is not slightly restricted by trees.
- Installing a new pedestrian and cycle crossing across Temple Way at Avon Street and upgrading the pedestrian and cycle crossing from Temple Back to Temple Back East.
- Narrowing the central reservation north of Temple Back East to allow for high-quality pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities east-west as well as north-south.
- Retaining the trees on the east side of Temple Way, repairing the pavement that their roots have broken, and adding new planting.

Investment and funding
The Temple Way project is being funded by the UK Government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
How we got here
We ran the Bristol City Centre Transport Changes consultation on the proposed changes in summer 2024.
We have since updated some of the designs for the transport proposals based on the feedback, including retaining the loading bay on Broad Plain.
Construction
We expect construction work to get underway in December 2025 and will take up to 12 months.
The main construction phases will start on the southern end close to Friary and progress northwards past Old Market Roundabout.
We will update this page soon with more detail about how the work could impact the area and your journeys.
