Overview
We are planning a series of changes to Bedminster Bridges Roundabout and the surrounding area, including, Bedminster Parade and Redcliff Hill.
Our aim is to speed up bus journeys and make it much easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to travel through the area.
Changes include removing the roundabout and making each bridge two-way: one for buses only and one for general traffic.
There would also be separate cycle paths as well as quicker crossings and more pavement space for pedestrians.
High quality paving would be used to reinforce the important gateway from Bedminster, Southville and all south Bristol to the city centre.
About
We are proposing a series of changes to Bedminster Bridges Roundabout and the surrounding area, including East Street, Bedminster Parade and Redcliff Hill.
Main proposals include
- Introducing dedicated bus-only lanes, separate from other traffic.
- Installing separated cycle routes through the area that join up to existing routes.
- Rationalising the number of pedestrian crossings, meaning pedestrians would only need to cross two roads to get north-south rather than four.
- Improving public space using high quality materials and refreshing planting.
- Removing Redcliff Hill underpass and creating new public spaces in these areas.
- Improving the existing cycle route over Redcliff Hill.
- Increasing the width of the pavement along the west side of Bedminster Parade.
- Planting new trees – a small number of trees will need to be removed to make way for the new layout, but these would be replaced and even more would be planted.
- Improving drainage in the area and replacing the out-of-date traffic lights.
- Altering loading arrangements in some areas.
- Changing some general traffic movements to allow improvements for bus, cycle, and pedestrian routes.
Investment and funding
The Bedminster Bridges project is part of the wider city centre project that is expected to be funded by the UK Government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
How we got here
Consultation for the proposed changes took place as part of the Bristol City Centre Transport Changes consultation in summer 2024.
We have since updated some of the designs for the transport proposals based on the feedback, including:
- Reinstating the left turn onto Clarence Road from Redcliff Hill.
- Improving the Cycle route link to Whitehouse Street.
- Adding a separated cycle lane from York Road to Coronation Road.
- Planting more trees on Bedminster Parade.
- Reducing the speed limit across the junction, and on Coronation Road (up to Gaol Ferry Bridge), Wapping Road and Cumberland Road (up to Gaol Ferry Bridge) to 20-mph.
- Guinea Street will remain two-way.
Construction
We are working on a full business case that will be submitted to the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority in November 2025 that requests the funding to build the scheme.
If successful, we expect construction work on the project to get underway in spring 2026.
Some early work has already started, for example we have closed the subway on Redcliff Hill that will make way for planting, wider footways, and a separated cycle path. To limit disruption and better manage traffic flow through the area, we plan to build the Redcliffe Way scheme in combination with Bedminster Bridges, carrying out the construction work in phases.
