Canon's Road and College Green junction
15 Dec 8pm-5.30am and 16 Dec 11pm-5.30am and 17, 18 & 22 Dec 9pm-5.30am
Description of work and disruption
We need to close the Canon’s Road and College Green junction overnight on Monday 15 from 8pm to 5am and on Tuesday 16 December from 11pm to 5am so we can resurface the road.
This is one of the final elements in our project to upgrade the outdated traffic lights and improve active travel routes, to make sure the lights do not fail and to create a more accessible crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
The road will close from where St Augustine’s Parade meets Denmark Street to College Green and Canon’s Road.

This means there will be no through access to general traffic travelling up or down Park Street or travelling to or from the city centre towards Anchor Road.
There will also be no access to St Augustine’s Parade from Baldwin Street or Colston Avenue.
Traffic will need to follow the signposted diversions, but are advised to find alternative routes that miss out the centre if possible as delays are to be expected.
Buses will still be able to access the Broad Quay bus gate as marshalls will allow buses through during the closure.
Buses will not be able to go up Park Street or Anchor Road in either direction and will be diverted.
On Wednesday 17, Thursday 18 and possibly on Monday 22 December between 9pm and 5.30pm we will be painting the road markings on the resurfaced junction.
We will be closing part of St Augustine’s Parade and College Green, although the route southbound from Colston Avenue (A38) to Anchor Road (A4) will remain open.
Traffic travelling up or down Park Street will need to follow the signposted diversions.
We are aiming to complete this work on Thursday 18 December, but may need another overnight closure on Monday 22 December if we’re unable to finish. The junction will be open as normal on Friday night and over the weekend.
Buses will again be diverted, although buses travelling southbound towards the Portway and Avonmouth will still be be able to use Anchor Road.
Thank you for bearing with us while we carry out these essential works.
There will be some small finishing touches to make to the refurbished junction in January 2026, when the project is expected to be completed.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists
Access will remain for pedestrians and cyclists.
Access for motor vehicles
We need to close the Canon’s Road and College Green junction overnight on Monday 15 from 8pm to 5am and on Tuesday 16 December from 11pm to 5am
It will be fully closed from where St Augustine’s Parade meets Denmark Street to College Green and Canon’s Road.
This means there will be no through access to general traffic travelling up or down Park Street or travelling to or from the city centre towards Anchor Road.
There will also be no access to St Augustine’s Parade from Baldwin Street or Colston Avenue.
Traffic will need to follow the signposted diversions via Marlborough Street, Upper Maudlin Street, and Park Row, the Triangle and Jacob’s Wells Road and in reverse, but are advised to find alternative routes that miss out the centre if possible as delays are to be expected.
On Wednesday 17, Thursday 18 and possibly Monday 22 December between 9pm and 5.30pm we need to close part of the junction, including part of St Augustine’s Parade and College Green, although the route southbound from Colston Avenue (A38) to Anchor Road (A4) will remain open.
