Christmas Street

20 October to 1 November 2025

Description of work and disruption

Work is taking place to create a separated cycle path on Christmas Street in the city centre.

While we had hoped to reopen Christmas Street sooner, the scale of the work means it is not safe to do so.

We expect Christmas Street to remain closed for the rest of October and hope to reopen it by 1 November 2025.

Thank you for bearing with us while we work to make the city centre safer for cyclists.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists

Access for pedestrians and cyclists is being maintained but please dismount from your bike.

Access for motor vehicles

To help cut time down for those who use the route, we have opened up a shorter diversion using Colston Avenue and Colston Avenue South.

Quay street will remain open.

The one-way restriction has been temporarily removed from Coston Avenue South, to allow access Quay Street and beyond.

The diversion is: From Rupert Street you can drive past Christmas Street, turn left onto Colston Avenue (past the old Colston statue plinth), left onto Colston Avenue South (the one-way having been suspended), continue driving past St Stephens Street, Small Street and onto Quay Street.

Access for buses

Services that use Christmas Street – including the 71, 1, 2, 2a, 9, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 6, 7, 16 and 5 – will continue east along Lewins Mead, turn around on the St James Barton Roundabout (Bearpit) then turn left in to Bridewell Street to pick up their normal route along Nelson Street.

Services that usually stop at Nelson Street B5 will stop at Nelson Street B3 outside The Island community arts venue and event space.
