9 December 2025
The Portway (A4)
Weds 10 Dec, 11pm to 5pm and Thurs 11 Dec, 9pm to 5am
Description of work and disruption
Updated at 9.15am on Wednesday 10 December.
We need to close the Portway and Hotwell Road overnight to traffic heading northbound between 11pm and 5am on Wednesday 10 December and between 9pm and 5am on Thursday 11 December 2025.
The road closure will start from Bennett Way and Cumberland Basin Road and will end at the Portway’s junction with Hadrian Close.
The closure is needed so the barriers can be moved further up the road in preparation for the next stage of works, which are part of the A4 Portway project.
We are also collaborating with Wessex Water on Thursday night (11 December) so they can replace a damaged manhole cover on the Portway without causing more disruption.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists
Access will remain for pedestrians and cyclists on the shared-use pavement.
Access for motor vehicles
Motor vehicles heading northbound will need to follow the diversion via Hotwells, Clifton Down and Stoke Bishop.
The works will not impact traffic heading southbound towards the city centre.

Access for buses
The bus services that will be affected include the 9, 41 and 37 travelling northbound.
The overnight closures will impact the following stops:
- Hotwell Road West – part-suspended only for service 41
- Merchants Road – part-suspended only for services 41 and 9
- Roman Way North and Riverleaze Northwest – fully closed for all bus services
