Broad Weir
5 January 2026 - late March 2026, with a lane closure from 18 Feb to 25 March
Description of work and disruption
We are upgrading a bus stop on Broad Weir (S12), to allow the bus stop to accommodate buses that are re-routed from The Horsefair and Penn Street later in 2026, which is part of the Broadmead project to remove traffic from these streets.
Work to upgrade the bus stop started on 5 January and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.
Because of a delay in sourcing materials, we have extended the closure of the eastbound lane of Broad Weir between Fairfax Street and Penn Street until Wednesday 25 March.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists
Access for pedestrians is being maintained. Cyclists travelling eastbound along Broad Weir can use the shared-use path alongside Castle Park.
Access for motor vehicles
We have closed the eastbound lane of Broad Weir between Fairfax Street and Penn and this has been extended until 25 March.
Vehicles going from Fairfax Street to Lower Castle Street will need to turn right along Newgate, down Union Street, right on The Horsefair and then onto Penn Street.
Access for buses
Throughout the works bus stop S12 will be closed on Broad Weir.
While the bus stop is suspended, but the road is still fully open, buses will use the new stop on Lower Castle Street as an alternative.
When the section of Broad Weir is closed one-way eastbound from 18 February to 25 March, buses will be diverted via Union Street, The Horsefair and Penn Street, stopping at bus stop S7 outside Wingstop on The Horsefair.
Affected bus services include: 24, 46, 47, 47x, 48, 48x, 49, 49x and 50.
